Subtitle: A reflection on age gaps, sibling bonds, and the connection I never had.

Introduction
For as long as I can remember, the idea of having an older brother has been one of the biggest emotional themes in my life. Not just someone a few years older — but a brother who would be in his late teens or early twenties when I was born. The kind of older brother who’s 45 or 47 today while I’m in my early 30s. That age gap feels comforting to me in a way that’s hard to explain.
—
Where This All StartedI think the curiosity began around 2009, maybe even earlier, back in grade 8. But something changed in early 2017 and 2018 when I found out the truth:I did have an older brother. And I also found out he had passed away long before I ever had the chance to meet him. That news hit me in a way I wasn’t prepared for. Suddenly, the dreams I had, the writing I did, the strong pull toward older-brother figures — it all made sense. I wasn’t imagining a fantasy. I was grieving something real.

Why Older Brothers Feel So ComfortingFor me, an older brother represents:
Safety Guidance Someone who checks on youSomeone who’s already survived challenges you’re facing
Someone who makes you feel less aloneSomeone who steps in when you’re overwhelmedIt’s not even about the number. It’s about the energy. The emotional stability. The presence. The feeling of being grounded by someone stronger and wiser.

Jealousy and GriefI’ll be honest: sometimes I feel jealous when I see other people talk about their older brothers. Even my psychologist has two older brothers — and part of me feels a sharp pain hearing about their closeness. It’s not anger. It’s grief. It’s the ache of knowing I never got to experience something I always needed.

How Age Gaps Change ThingsSome people think it’s strange to have a brother who’s much older. But to me, that’s the whole point. A 15–20 year age gap creates:A mentorA guideA protectorA friendA father-figure, but not exactlyA stable presence during childhoodIt’s the kind of bond that feels stabilizing and rare.—How This Shapes My WritingIf you’ve followed my writing — my journals, my novels, my logs — you’ve probably noticed something:There’s almost always an older brother. It’s not a coincidence. It’s how I heal. It’s how I process grief. It’s how I write the love I never got to experience.—Final ThoughtsI don’t think it’s strange or childish to want an older brother. I think it’s human. I think it shows a deep emotional truth inside me — one that has been here since childhood and continues to shape the man I am today. And even though I never got to know my real older brother, the longing for that connection still lives in me. It guides my dreams, my writing, and the emotional themes I return to over and over again.
