Subtitle: A reflection on age gaps, sibling bonds, and the connection I never had.

Introduction
For as long as I can remember, the idea of having an older brother has been one of the biggest emotional themes in my life. Not just someone a few years older â but a brother who would be in his late teens or early twenties when I was born. The kind of older brother whoâs 45 or 47 today while Iâm in my early 30s. That age gap feels comforting to me in a way thatâs hard to explain.
—
Where This All StartedI think the curiosity began around 2009, maybe even earlier, back in grade 8. But something changed in early 2017 and 2018 when I found out the truth:I did have an older brother. And I also found out he had passed away long before I ever had the chance to meet him. That news hit me in a way I wasnât prepared for. Suddenly, the dreams I had, the writing I did, the strong pull toward older-brother figures â it all made sense. I wasnât imagining a fantasy. I was grieving something real.

Why Older Brothers Feel So ComfortingFor me, an older brother represents:
Safety Guidance Someone who checks on youSomeone whoâs already survived challenges youâre facing
Someone who makes you feel less aloneSomeone who steps in when youâre overwhelmedItâs not even about the number. Itâs about the energy. The emotional stability. The presence. The feeling of being grounded by someone stronger and wiser.

Jealousy and GriefIâll be honest: sometimes I feel jealous when I see other people talk about their older brothers. Even my psychologist has two older brothers â and part of me feels a sharp pain hearing about their closeness.Itâs not anger.Itâs grief.Itâs the ache of knowing I never got to experience something I always needed.

How Age Gaps Change ThingsSome people think itâs strange to have a brother whoâs much older. But to me, thatâs the whole point. A 15â20 year age gap creates:A mentorA guideA protectorA friendA father-figure, but not exactlyA stable presence during childhoodItâs the kind of bond that feels stabilizing and rare.—How This Shapes My WritingIf youâve followed my writing â my journals, my novels, my logs â youâve probably noticed something:Thereâs almost always an older brother.Itâs not a coincidence.Itâs how I heal.Itâs how I process grief.Itâs how I write the love I never got to experience.—Final ThoughtsI donât think itâs strange or childish to want an older brother. I think itâs human. I think it shows a deep emotional truth inside me â one that has been here since childhood and continues to shape the man I am today. And even though I never got to know my real older brother, the longing for that connection still lives in me. It guides my dreams, my writing, and the emotional themes I return to over and over again.
